Open Source and Open Data is now everywhere and in some areas the best solution available. Nevertheless some core technologies are maintained through unpaid and overworked volunteers, while companies are collecting the profits through bundling those into products and services. Have we developed unhealthy habits? Can copyleft licensing help? Can we improve our situation ourselves?

Thomas Skowron is an independent software consultant from Germany with a decade of experience. He is an OpenStreetMap contributor and active in FOSSGIS. He develops and maintains a variety of Open Source software, contributes small patches everywhere on the way and advocates for more maintenance funding for open infrastructure projects.
